Our unique 12-way splitter wedge divides the wood into an ideal size for packaging. By splitting the wood into manageable moderate pieces, we can fit more into each package, allowing consumers to start the fire with a few pieces and add more later, thus extending the burn time.
Additionally, the splitter wedge shapes the wood into pieces that are easier to stack, enabling us to create tighter packages that won't fall apart. A stretch wrap machine securely binds together fifty packages on a pallet in a crisscross formation, preventing them from falling off when opened. This wrapping method ensures that our pallets are tighter and more stable than those that are hand-wrapped.
At West End Firewood, we exclusively use hardwood. We avoid softwood and wood from "unverified" sources. We collaborate with the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR) to ensure that our timber comes from sustainable sources. We also use a few select private foresters. For us, sustainability is paramount – for every tree we take, we plant another. We never utilize compressed hardwood products. Some firewood packagers incorporate pieces of softwood here and there to fill empty spots or dispose of wood waste, but that's not our practice.
